OSTP to Host Workshop on the Science of Science Measurement

The President’s Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) is hosting a workshop December 2-3, 2010, in Washington, DC intended to “connect science agencies with the frontier of current research on science measurement” and inform science policy practitioners about practical issues.

According to OSTP, these issues include:

  • Managing scientific portfolios in a more scientific manner
  • Developing performance and outcome metrics
  • Measuring the return on investment
  • Using science to identify emerging trends in the U.S. scientific enterprise

Workshop topics areas include: economic benefits; science and technology workforce development; technology development and deployment; and social, health, and environmental benefits.

Keynote speakers at the Workshop on the Science of Science Measurement include Jeff Smith, Ph.D., faculty associate at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research, and Maureen Pirog, Ph.D., editor-in-chief of the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management.
